AUM in European ETFs/ETPs reach record $567bn in September

Assets in European-listed exchange-traded funds and exchange-traded products have reached a new record high of $567bn at the end of Q3 2016, according to latest figures from ETFGI, a London-based consultant for the ETF industry. ETFs/ETPs in Europe gathered $3.0bn in September, marking the 25th consecutive month of positive net inflows for the region.

Record levels of assets were also reached at the end of Q3 for ETFs/ETPs listed globally at $3.408tn, in the United States at $2.416tn, and in Asia Pacific ex-Japan at $131.9bn.

Fixed Income ETFs/ETPs gathered the largest net inflows for the month with $1.2bn, followed by equity ETFs/ETPs with $1.0bn, and commodity ETFs/ETPs with $667m.

iShares was the most successful gatherer of net new assets during the month with $1.3bn, followed by Vanguard with $942m and UBS with $414m.

Year-to-date (YTD) through end of Q3 2016, ETFs/ETPs have seen net inflows of $41.5bn. Fixed Income ETFs/ETPs gathered the largest net inflows YTD with $26.5bn, followed by commodity ETFs/ETPs with $12.2bn, and equity ETFs/ETPs with $845m.

iShares is the largest ETF/ETP provider in Europe in terms of assets managed with $266bn, reflecting 46.9% market share. Deutsche Asset Management is second with $61bn in their db x-tracker range of ETFs, representing 10.8% market share, and Lyxor, with $52bn, holds 9.2% market share. The top three ETF/ETP providers, out of 56, account for 66.9% of European ETF/ETP assets.

At the end of Q3 2016, the European ETF/ETP industry had 2,219 ETFs/ETPs, with 6,953 listings, from 56 providers listed on 25 exchanges in 21 countries.
