CI Financial acquires WisdomTree’s Canadian ETF business

Toronto-headquartered CI Financial has agreed to acquire WisdomTree Asset Management Canada, the Canadian ETF business of WisdomTree Investments. The transaction will see CI Financial add 14 WisdomTree ETFs collectively housing approximately C$960 million to its ETF family. Kurt MacAlpine, CEO of CI Financial, commented, “As Canadians increasingly adopt the ETF structure, the addition of WisdomTree’s Canadian operations will expand our line-up of mandates and increase the scale of our ETF business”.


First Asset launches high-interest savings ETF in Canada

First Asset Investment Management has unveiled a new actively managed ETF in Canada – the CI First Asset High Interest Savings ETF (CSAV CN) – which seeks to maximize monthly income by investing in high-interest deposit accounts. “Many investors need to hold cash in their portfolios but end up sacrificing returns to achieve safety and liquidity,” said Rohit Mehta, President of CI First Asset ETFs. “The CI First Asset High Interest Savings ETF has been designed to be a higher-yielding alternative to holding cash directly while preserving the benefits of daily liquidity, convenience, and flexibility.”

Assets invested in actively managed exchange-traded funds and exchange-traded products listed globally reached a new record high of $40.3bn at the end of Q3 2016, according to data from London-based ETF industry consultant ETFGI. During September, actively managed ETFs/ETPs saw net inflows of $574m, contributing to year-to-date net inflows of $3.9bn for the asset type. Only nine actively managed ETFs/ETPs, out of a total 293, have managed to reach the coveted $1bn AUM milestone.
